What is the Difference Between Blockchain And Bitcoin?

Bitcoin and blockchain aren’t the same thing, did you know? There are plenty of people who use the terms interchangeably, probably because blockchain and Bitcoin are so closely related. This article will clarify the differences between the two if you’ve ever wondered what they are.

What is Blockchain?

In simplest terms, a blockchain is a computer file that stores data. Or, more technically, it’s a distributed ledger (database) that is distributed (duplicated) across many computers and is therefore decentralized.

One of the reasons blockchain is so transformative is its decentralization. The blockchain is completely transparent and data is verified user consensus, unlike traditional centralized databases, where records are processed a single central administrator (such as a company or government). In spite of this transparency, blockchains are extremely secure. The reason for this is that hackers cannot target a single point of attack.

Distributed. Decentralized. This Sounds a Bit Like Bitcoin

That’s exactly right! Bitcoin relies on blockchain technology, which was developed specifically for the cryptocurrency. Blockchain was the first application of blockchain, and Bitcoin would not exist without it. Because of this, the two names are often used interchangeably.

Blockchain, however, is not the same as Bitcoin.

A Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency, or peer-to-peer electronic payment system, in which users can anonymously send and receive Bitcoins in their Bitcoin wallet without interference from a third party. Blockchain technology is also used other cryptocurrency networks besides Bitcoin. Despite Bitcoin’s use of blockchain technology, blockchain technology is much more than just Bitcoin.

Examining Blockchain’s Broader Applications

Blockchain has a wide range of applications beyond cryptocurrency networks due to its inextricable connection with Bitcoin. People (including myself) believe that blockchain has the potential to revolutionize the way we do business, just as the internet did before it.

The following are just a few examples of how blockchain can be used beyond Bitcoin:
