3 Hockey Balance Board Exercises

3 Hockey Balance Board Exercises

So you decided to get yourself a hockey balance board and get your core in max shape. Good for you! Once you get used to being able to balance on it without too much hassle, you will be ready to push your balancing skills to the next level and build your core even more. Here are some exercises that can help you to get the most out of your workouts truly see the value of our balance board investment.

Side to Side

This first exercise is one of the easier ones, but it is effective and will help you to be able to do some of the next exercises on the list. The first thing you need to do is be balanced on the board and ready to move around a little bit.

First, push your body to the right or left while keeping balanced so that you roll your board over the roller all the way to one side, without letting the long end touch the floor when you do it.

Once you maneuver to one side, push your body back in the other direction and do the same movement as before, but be on the opposite side of the board.

Where your left foot was on top of where the roller is, now your right foot will be.

Repeat the exercise 10 or 15 times back and forth.

Squat

Doing a squat while balanced on a hockey balance board might not be as easy as it seems. You have to have yourself correctly balanced before you start, which might not seem like a big deal, but is important.

From the standing position make sure that your feet are about shoulder-width apart on the balance board so that you can do a correct squat.

Once you are in position and are balanced enough to move a little, do a slow but steady squat downward until you are in the squat position. Your knees should be bent and your thighs should be straight out from your body at a 90-degree angle.

Slowly raise back up to the standing position and repeat 10 times.

Pushup

Doing a pushup on a balance board is not that difficult, but it can help to build some core strength. By using your upper body to balance your self you not only build your pectorals and your shoulder muscles, but you also activate your core.

With your balance board positioned over your roller, get yourself down into the pushup position.  You can balance yourself with your hands when you are ready.

You can do a regular pushup with your feet flat on the floor behind you, or you can up the game placing your feet at an upward position so that your chest is in an inclined position where you will get most of the burden of your body weight in your shoulders and upper pectorals.

Go down for a pushup, but be prepared to keep yourself balanced. It won’t be near as difficult to balance yourself on the board with your hands as opposed to your feet, but it will take a bit of getting used to.

If you choose to incline your feet, you will have more difficulty keeping yourself balanced, but you will get more out of your exercise.

Conclusion

Whenever you workout on a balance board you are putting your core muscles to work. When you activate your core, you develop more core strength. Your core is what keeps you balanced and on your feet, so keep it as strong and as healthy as you can.
